Job Summary

The Retirement Retail Intelligence Senior Director leads the competitive intelligence practice for Retail Retirement business. They are responsible for leading the team that collects, analyzes, and communicates competitive intelligence and industry trends focusing on both core and emerging competitors. They will lead deep analysis of competitor product specifications, strategies, target markets, and marketing.

The leader will communicate insights gleaned by their team to help influence strategy, improve product development decisions, improve marketing tactics and approaches, and to define our overall positioning versus competitors. To be successful, they need the ability to think both strategically and tactically about industry trends and competitor actions to compare and contrast Protective’s offering and articulate the implications for Protective Life.

In addition to traditional competitive intelligence activity, the position will play a key role in the Retirement Product Strategy Leadership Team and oversee the annuity rate setting and fund review process. The leader will integrate those processes and their outcomes into our aggregate Product Intelligence function to influence efficiency and effectiveness of our products and the deployment of resources.

Responsibilities

  • Manages experts who are the leading authority of the competitive landscape for the Retail Retirement products.
  • Leads and is accountable for the competitive intelligence activities within the Retail Retirement business.
  • Collaborates closely with internal customers such as marketing, marketing strategy, actuarial, product development, and operations to produce insights through competitive intelligence.
  • Leads or conducts primary and secondary research projects, or in collaboration with other teams, to analyze, benchmark, compare, and derive competitors’ product and overall market insights for multiple internal customers.
  • Ensures that research is conducted according to ethical research practices, adhering to all anti-trust and other legal and regulatory guidelines.
  • Leads, directs, and mentors the Product Intelligence team members to successfully produce the insights, content, and outcomes they are charged with, while placing a specific focus on their professional development.
  • Contribute and evaluate ideas based on research and trend analysis for marketing literature, illustrations, and presentations to favorably position Protective’s product portfolio.
  • Establishes and develops communication techniques used to summarize competitive pricing and product specifications, industry trends, and product construction and benchmarking, with a focus on providing relevancy for the multiple constituencies throughout Protective Life.
  • The team will support wholesalers by developing, maintaining, and improving the resources available. Will assist in case design, onboarding new wholesalers, and providing relevant sales support as needed.
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of comparison tools, tactical-level product battlecards, and other side-by-side comparisons of products and features.
  • Directs or participates in multi-practice projects to contribute to and analyze sales and asset reports from 3rd party organizations (LIMRA, Morningstar, Beacon, etc.) and develops summary reports to help leadership understand our position within the marketplace.
  • Has individual, or supports team members, participation and leadership in industry networking groups (LISSSG, LIMRA, and LOMA committees, etc.) Uses those network resources to further gather relevant information about competitors and participates in exchanges of information, such as regular meetings and answering or creating surveys.
  • Directs or executes ad-hoc requests for competitive or market information.
  • Consistently seeks personal self-development and other learning opportunities to prepare for new responsibilities and challenges in a changing environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • 50% Manages the team’s competitive Intelligence around product features, experiences, and practices
  • in order to drive insights to and from the Product Strategy Leadership Team participation
  • 30% Oversees the Rate Setting Process and Support
  • 15% Performs and guides Fund Analysis
  • 10% Progress team development, processes and routines
  • 5% Divisional and corporate responsibilities, as required.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years’ experience in the financial services industry required; competitive intelligence experience and deep knowledge of CI practices and tools preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required; relevant advanced degrees, executive education, and industry designations or licenses are preferred
  • Sophisticated understanding of industry products, competitors, distribution channels, and marketplace dynamics
  • Demonstrated ability to identify key insights by connecting disparate information sources and to translate insights into actionable recommendations
  • Proven ability to collaborate across business functions to gain trust and influence outcomes
  • Results-focused, high degree of accountability
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to communicate across all levels of the organization and be comfortable providing training and presentations
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship skills
  • Intrinsically motivated, extremely organized, and able to independently manage multiple projects
Protective’s targeted salary range for this position is $124,500 to $150,000. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors, including but not limited to, job location, skills, and experience. The range listed is just one component of Protective’s total compensation package for employees.
This position also offers additional incentive opportunities through an annual incentive based on individual and Company performance.
